Rhino 3D vs Blender: which for product design?
Rhino models with mathematical surfaces and exact dimensions. Blender models with polygons and renders beautifully. For something that gets manufactured, that difference decides it.

The short answer
Rhino models with NURBS: mathematical surfaces with exact dimensions. If the thing will be manufactured, machined, printed to tolerance or handed to an engineer, this is what you want.
Blender models with polygon meshes. If the goal is images, animation, concept exploration or presentation, this is what you want.
For product design specifically, many designers use both: model in Rhino, render in Blender.
NURBS versus polygons, in plain terms
NURBS surfaces are defined by mathematics. A curve is a true curve at any zoom level, and dimensions are exact. Export to a manufacturer and the geometry is unambiguous.
Polygons are flat faces approximating a shape. Smooth enough at render resolution, and an approximation nonetheless. Excellent for visuals, imprecise for manufacturing tolerances.
That single difference explains almost every other distinction between the two tools.
Where Rhino wins
Precision. Exact dimensions, tolerances, true curves. Non-negotiable for manufacturing.
Surface quality. Continuity between surfaces, which matters enormously for products people hold and look at.
Manufacturing formats. STEP and IGES export that engineers and manufacturers actually use.
Grasshopper. Visual parametric scripting, widely used in architecture and complex product form.
Industry fit. Established in jewelry, footwear, marine, furniture and architectural design. McNeel's Rhino site and its documentation set out the details.
Where Blender wins
Rendering and presentation. Materials, lighting and render quality that Rhino does not attempt to match natively.
Animation. Product animations, exploded views, motion.
Organic form. Sculpting and free-form shapes.
Cost. Free versus a purchase, which is a real factor for a student or a freelancer starting out.
Everything else in one place. Compositing, simulation, video, all included. Blender's download page and manual are the starting points.
The workflow most product designers use
- Model in Rhino, precisely, with real dimensions.
- Export as a mesh (usually OBJ or FBX) for visuals, keeping the NURBS original for manufacturing.
- Render in Blender: materials, lighting, environment, presentation images.
- Send STEP or IGES from Rhino to whoever is making it.
That split uses each tool for what it is best at, which is why it is common rather than a compromise.
Modeling a manufactured product in a polygon modeler is like drafting a building in a paint program. Beautiful pictures, and nobody can build from them.
Which to learn first
- Product design aiming at manufacturing: Rhino, then Blender for visuals.
- Concept design and visualization: Blender, and add Rhino when a project needs to be made.
- Jewelry, footwear, furniture, marine: Rhino. It is the standard in those fields.
- Architecture: Rhino with Grasshopper, alongside whatever documentation tool your practice uses.
- General 3D, games, animation: Blender, and there is a comparison with Maya if that is the question.
- Learning 3D at all, with no specific goal: Blender, because it is free and the concepts transfer.
What transfers between them
The thinking: form, proportion, surface quality, how light describes a shape, and how to present work. Those are design skills rather than software skills.
What does not transfer is the modeling approach itself. NURBS and polygon workflows genuinely differ, and time in one does not make you fast in the other. Budget for learning each properly rather than assuming an afternoon.
