How to curve text in Canva

The short answer

1. Add a text box and type your words.
2. With it selected, click Effects in the toolbar.
3. Under Shape, choose Curve.
4. Drag the slider. Positive arches the text upward, negative curves it downward, and zero is straight.

That is the whole feature. The rest of this is making it look good, which is a different problem.

Controlling the arc

The slider is the only control, so shape the result with the text itself:

• Fewer words curve better. Three words on an arc reads well. A sentence on an arc looks like a fairground sign.
• Letter spacing matters. Open the Spacing settings and add a little tracking. Curving pushes letters together on the inside of the arc, and extra spacing counteracts it.
• Font choice matters. Simple, even-weight fonts hold up on a curve. Scripts and very thin serifs distort badly.
• Size before curve. Set the size first, then curve, because changing size afterwards changes how the arc reads.

Making a circular badge

Canva has no single circular-text control, so it is two text boxes:

1. Create the top text and push the curve slider high.
2. Create a second text box for the bottom.
3. Curve it the opposite way (negative value).
4. Position the two so their arcs form one circle.
5. Group them (select both, Ctrl+G) so they move together.

Zoom in and align the ends carefully. The difference between a badge that looks professional and one that looks improvised is usually two pixels of alignment.

When curved text helps

• Badges, seals and stamps. The classic use, and it works.
• Logos with an established circular form. Coffee shops, breweries, craft brands.
• Following a shape that is already in the design, like the arc of a plate or a wheel.
• A single short headline where the curve adds movement.

When it does not

Most of the time, honestly.

• Body text. Curved paragraphs are hard to read and always look amateur.
• Long headlines. The distortion at the ends undermines whatever the words are doing.
• Because it is available. A curve should follow something in the composition. A curve for its own sake reads as decoration for the sake of decoration.
• On top of a busy photo. Curved text plus visual noise is unreadable twice over.

Straight type is not boring. It is confident. Curve it when the design has a curve in it, not when the layout feels flat and you want to fix that quickly.

Better ways to fix a flat layout

If you reached for the curve because the design felt lifeless, these usually work better:

• Increase the size contrast. Make the important thing much bigger and the rest much smaller.
• Add space. Crowding is the most common cause of a flat design.
• Use two fonts, not four. One for headings, one for everything else.
• Left-align. Centered everything is a common reason a layout feels shapeless.

When to use another tool

For text on a precise path, following a specific shape you have drawn, Illustrator does it properly with a real Type on a Path tool. That is the right tool for logo work where the curve has to be exact and the file has to scale.
