Is CapCut free?

Yes, there is a free version of CapCut on mobile and desktop, and it covers most of what people actually do: cutting, captions, music, text, transitions and export.
CapCut Pro is the paid tier, adding extra effects, templates, AI tools and cloud features. Most casual editors do not need it. The current split lives on CapCut's own site, because these tiers move around.

The honest test is the same as with any upgrade: use the free version for a fortnight on real work and count how many times a Pro-only feature blocks you. Five or more times a week means it pays for itself. Once or twice means it does not.

Edits you assemble yourself export clean. Where branding appears is with certain templates and specific effects, which the app marks before you use them.
So the practical rule is: build your own edits and you will not see a watermark. Use a trending template and check what it adds before you export.
The licensing question
This is the part worth pausing on if you edit for a business or for clients.
Consumer editing apps have terms about commercial use, ownership of exported content, and what happens to media you upload for AI features. Those terms change, and they differ by region.
Before using any consumer app for client work, read the current terms of service. Not because there is a known problem, but because "I assumed it was fine" is a poor position to be in when a client asks. This applies to every free consumer tool, not just this one.
Free tools are excellent and they are still someone else's platform, with someone else's terms. Read them once, then get on with editing.
When CapCut is the right tool
- Short-form social video. It is built for exactly this and it is fast.
- Captions. The auto captions are good, and captions are essential on social.
- Editing on a phone, where desktop editors are not an option.
- Trend-driven content, where templates and effects match what viewers expect.
When to use something else
- Longer projects. Managing a twenty-minute edit is uncomfortable here.
- Serious audio work. Multi-track mixing and repair belong in a desktop editor.
- Real color grading. DaVinci Resolve is free and far more capable, and there is a breakdown of what its free version includes.
