How to use CapCut: a beginner editing guide

The short answer

The CapCut workflow that works:

1. Set the aspect ratio first, before adding anything.
2. Import and rough cut, keeping only what earns its place.
3. Tighten, removing every pause.
4. Captions, auto-generated then corrected by hand.
5. Music and sound, well under the voice.
6. Text and effects, sparingly and consistently.
7. Export at the highest quality available.

Step 1: canvas first

Tap Ratio and choose before you do anything else. 9:16 for TikTok, Reels and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 for feed posts.

Reframing after you have edited means repositioning every element, and it is the single most common beginner time sink here.

Step 2 and 3: cut, then cut again

Import your clips. Position the playhead, select a clip, tap Split, then delete what you do not want.

Two passes, as in any edit:

• First pass: remove the obviously unusable.
• Second pass: remove the merely acceptable. Pauses, filler words, the run-up to a point.

Short-form is unforgiving about pacing. If you are unsure whether something should stay, it should not.

Step 4: captions, properly

Tap Text, then Auto captions. CapCut transcribes your speech.

Then do the part nearly everyone skips: read every line and fix it. Automatic transcription gets names, technical terms and numbers wrong, and a confidently wrong caption is more distracting than none.

Style them consistently:

• Middle third of the screen, clear of platform interface at top and bottom
• Large enough to read on a phone at arm's length
• One style across all your videos, so your content is recognizable
• Short lines, two or three words for fast content

Step 5: sound

• Voice loud and clear, music noticeably underneath.
• Fade music in and out at the start and end. Two seconds, and it sounds far more finished.
• Sound effects on transitions, used lightly.
• Check on phone speakers, not headphones. That is how most people will hear it.

Step 6: text and effects with restraint

CapCut's effect library is enormous, which is a trap. Pick two or three you use consistently and ignore the rest.

Effects worth learning:

• Speed ramps for compressing boring middles
• A simple zoom or punch-in to create movement in a static shot
• One transition you use everywhere, usually a cut

A consistent look is worth more than a varied one. Viewers recognize consistency and read it as competence.

Every effect you add is a small bet that it improves the video. Most beginners bet on all of them at once, which is how a fifteen-second clip ends up exhausting.

Step 7: export

Highest resolution and frame rate available, and the highest bitrate offered. Platforms compress on upload, so uploading an already-compressed file compresses it twice and it shows.

Export at the frame rate you edited at. Changing it at export causes stutter.

Desktop versus phone

Phone: faster for simple edits, always with you, and the natural home for social content.

Desktop: more precise trimming, easier text placement, bigger preview, and much less painful for anything over a minute.

Projects can sync between them, so filming on a phone and finishing on a desktop is a reasonable workflow. CapCut's site has the current apps and what each includes.

When to move to a bigger tool
